Number Duel Games
24 Game
The 24 Game is a classic arithmetic puzzle. You are given four numbers, and your goal is to combine them using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to make exactly 24. Each number must be used exactly once. Parentheses are allowed to control the order of operations.
Rules
- You receive four numbers (typically 1 through 9).
- Use each number exactly once — no more, no less.
- Combine them with +, −, ×, and ÷.
- Parentheses are allowed to group operations.
- The final result must equal 24.
Example
Given the numbers 3, 8, 3, 8, one solution is:
8 ÷ (3 − 8 ÷ 3) = 24
This is a "hard" puzzle because it requires fractional intermediate results. Most puzzles are easier. For example, given 4, 7, 8, 8, you might solve it as (7 − (8 ÷ 8)) × 4 = 24.
Difficulty Levels
- Easy: Many possible solutions. Often solvable with addition and multiplication only.
- Medium: One or two solutions. May require subtraction or division.
- Hard: Requires non-integer intermediate results (fractions). The toughest puzzles.
Strategy Tips
Start by looking for pairs that multiply to 24: (3, 8), (4, 6), or (2, 12). Then check whether the remaining two numbers can combine to create the other factor. For example, if you have a 3 and an 8, you need the other two numbers to produce 1 (so 3 × 8 × 1 = 24) or to adjust the product.
Another approach: look for pairs that add to 24. Since the maximum sum of four single-digit numbers is 36, addition-based solutions are common on easy puzzles.
For hard puzzles, think about division that produces fractions. A fraction multiplied by the right number can clean up to exactly 24.
Daily Challenge
