"Make 24" is another name for the classic 24 Game puzzle. Given four numbers, your task is to "make" the number 24 by combining them with addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Each number must be used exactly once.

How Make 24 Works

You receive four numbers. You have four operations: +, −, ×, ÷. You can use parentheses to control the order. Your expression must evaluate to exactly 24.

Simple Example

Numbers: 2, 4, 6, 8

Solution: (8 − 6) × 4 × (2 + 1)... wait, that uses 1.

Actually: 8 × (4 − 6 ÷ 2)... let's compute: 8 × (4 − 3) = 8 × 1 = 8. No.

Try: (6 ÷ (8 − 6)) × (4 + 2... that uses extra numbers.

Simpler: 2 × 4 + 6 + 8... = 8 + 6 + 8 = 22. Not quite.

Correct: 8 × 4 − 6 − 2 = 32 − 8 = 24. ✓

Make 24 Strategy

The key insight is that 24 factors into several useful products: 3×8, 4×6, 2×12. If you can partition your four numbers into two pairs where one pair multiplies to a factor and the other pair produces the complementary factor, you have a multiplication-based solution.

For addition-based solutions, look for combinations of the four numbers that sum to 24. This works when the numbers are large enough (e.g., 5, 6, 7, 6 sums to 24).
