Example Puzzle
Suppose the numbers are 3, 3, 8, and 8. One solution is 8 ÷ (3 − 8 ÷ 3) = 24. That is why the 24 Game is more than quick calculation: students have to test operations, use parentheses, and sometimes work backward from 24.

Strategy Tips for 24 Game Online
A useful first move is to look for pairs that can make friendly numbers such as 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, or 24. For example, if two numbers can make 6, the remaining pair might only need to make 4. If two numbers can make 1, the other two numbers can sometimes be turned into 24 directly. This helps students move from guessing to planning.
It also helps to work backward from 24. Ask what final step could have produced 24: maybe 6 × 4, 12 × 2, 48 ÷ 2, or 27 − 3. Once students name a possible final step, the four numbers become building blocks instead of a random set. That small shift is the heart of the game: arithmetic becomes search, structure, and flexible reasoning.
