Mental Math Test
The Mental Math Test is a free online speed arithmetic challenge. You have 60 seconds to solve as many problems as possible. Each question shows four multiple-choice answers — tap the correct one fast to build combo streaks and earn bonus points.
How It Works
- Press Start to begin the 60-second timer.
- An arithmetic problem appears (e.g., 7 × 8 = ?).
- Choose from 4 answer options — use mouse, tap, or keys 1-4.
- Correct answers earn points and build your streak for combo bonuses.
- Wrong answers cost 3 seconds and reset your streak.
- Questions get harder as you progress — early questions use addition, later ones include multiplication and division.
Why Practice Mental Math?
Mental math — doing arithmetic in your head without paper or calculator — is a fundamental cognitive skill. Regular practice improves working memory, processing speed, and numerical fluency. It's especially valuable for students preparing for timed exams, professionals who work with numbers daily, and anyone who wants to keep their mind sharp.
- Students: Build automaticity with basic facts for SAT, GRE, and classroom tests.
- Adults: Keep your brain agile and improve everyday number sense.
- Teachers: Use as a classroom warm-up or daily math drill.
- Competitive practice: Train for mental calculation competitions.
Scoring System
Each correct answer is worth 10 base points. Your streak bonus adds 5 points per consecutive correct answer, up to a maximum of 50 bonus. So a 10-streak earns 60 points per question. Challenge yourself to maintain long streaks for maximum score.
Tips for Higher Scores
- Use keyboard keys 1-4 for faster answering on desktop.
- Avoid wrong answers — the 3-second penalty and streak reset are costly.
- If unsure, eliminate obviously wrong options first.
- Practice multiplication tables — they appear frequently at higher levels.
