Number Duel Game Mode
Subtraction Duel
Subtraction Duel is a Number Duel mode built around subtraction. Each player keeps one active number from 1 to 12. The absolute difference between the two active numbers becomes the target for the turn. Players then claim matching cells on a 5×5 board and race to connect four in a row.
How It Works
- Choose your active number from the number rack (1 through 12).
- Subtract the smaller active number from the larger. That difference is the target.
- Claim an open board cell that shows the matching target value.
- Connect four claimed cells horizontally, vertically, or diagonally to win.
Because the target uses absolute difference, subtraction never goes negative. This keeps the game accessible for younger players while still rewarding deep strategic thinking.
Example Turn
Your opponent's active number is 8. You choose 5. The target becomes |8 − 5| = 3. Every open cell with the value 3 lights up. You claim one that blocks the opponent's diagonal. On the next turn, the opponent might switch to 11, making the new target |11 − 5| = 6 — a completely different set of cells.
Subtraction Duel Strategy Tips
In Subtraction Duel, the target range is narrow (0 to 11), which means the same cell values appear frequently. This creates more blocking opportunities and more double-threat setups than in Sum Duel, where targets can reach 24.
- Control the center. Center cells belong to more possible winning lines.
- Force small targets. Choosing a number close to your opponent's limits their options.
- Watch for forks. A cell that completes two different lines at once is a winning move.
- Block early. If the opponent has three in a row, blocking is more important than attacking.
Ways to Play
- Bot Match: play against the computer for quick practice.
- Friend Room: share a link and play a real-time 1v1 match with a friend.
- Daily Duel: play the same fixed board as everyone else and compare results.
Other Number Duel Modes
Subtraction Duel uses subtraction. Sum Duel uses addition. Product Duel uses multiplication. Division Duel uses division. Fifteen Duel drops the number rack entirely. All modes share the same tactical spirit: the math creates the moves, but the board control decides who wins.
