Coordinate Battleship

Coordinate Battleship is a free strategy game that teaches grid coordinates. You and the bot each have three hidden ships on a 10 by 10 grid. Take turns firing at coordinates like C5 or H9. The game tells you if each shot was a miss, a hit, or a sinking blow. First to sink all opponent ships wins.

How to Play

  1. Press Start. Both fleets are placed randomly and hidden.
  2. Your fleet appears on the left grid. Enemy waters are on the right.
  3. Click any unexplored cell on the enemy grid to fire a shot.
  4. Misses show a dot, hits show a cross, and sunk ships turn red.
  5. The bot fires back. Keep going until one side has no ships left.

Learning Coordinate Planes Through Play

The coordinate plane is one of the most important concepts in middle-school math. It underpins graphing, geometry, and eventually algebra and calculus. Coordinate Battleship gives students a reason to practice reading grid positions without it feeling like a math exercise. Every shot requires naming a column letter and row number, which is the same skill as reading (x, y) coordinates on a graph.

Using Coordinate Battleship in the Classroom

This game works well as an introduction to graphing for grades 4 through 7. Students practice coordinate naming in a competitive format, and teachers can connect the A-J columns to x-axis values and the 1-10 rows to y-axis values. After playing, students transition more easily to plotting points on a standard coordinate plane.
