Number Duel Strategy
Sum Duel Strategy
Sum Duel is built around active numbers. If your active number is 5 and your opponent's active number is 7, the target is 12. You can claim an open cell with value 12. The trick is that changing your active number changes the target, which changes the cells that can be claimed.
Choose the Target, Not Just the Number
A beginner thinks, "Which number can I play?" A stronger player thinks, "Which target gives me the best cell?" If several active numbers create legal targets, compare the cells. A target that lets you claim a central or line-building cell is usually better than a target that claims an isolated corner with no follow-up.
Attack and Defense
Sum Duel often gives many possible legal targets, so defense matters. Before claiming a cell, scan the opponent's lines. If they already have three cells in a line, a defensive target may be necessary even when an attacking move looks tempting.
Example
Suppose your opponent's active number is 6. If you choose 4, the target is 10. If you choose 8, the target is 14. The best choice depends on the board: target 10 might block a diagonal, while target 14 might extend your own vertical line. The arithmetic is simple; the strategy is deciding which board cell matters most.
Common Mistakes
- Taking the first highlighted cell without checking lines.
- Ignoring a block because an attacking move is available.
- Choosing an active number that gives the opponent an easy reply.
- Forgetting that a pass is only useful when no legal claim can be created.
