4×4 Sudoku

4×4 Sudoku is a mini version of the classic logic puzzle. The grid has just 16 cells arranged in a 4×4 square with 2×2 blocks. Players use numbers 1–4 to fill the grid so that every row, column, and block contains each number exactly once. It's the ideal starting point for children and complete beginners.

Why Start with 4×4?

A standard 9×9 Sudoku grid has 81 cells and can be overwhelming for young children. The 4×4 grid keeps things manageable: there are only 16 cells to fill and just 4 numbers to work with. A child can typically complete a 4×4 easy puzzle in under 5 minutes, giving them a quick win that motivates them to try harder puzzles.

How to Solve a 4×4 Sudoku

  1. Look for rows, columns, or blocks that already have 3 out of 4 numbers filled in. The missing number goes in the empty cell.
  2. If a cell's row already has the number 2, that cell can't be 2.
  3. If a cell's column already has the number 3, that cell can't be 3 either.
  4. Check the 2×2 block as well — it can't contain duplicates.
  5. The only number that doesn't conflict with row, column, or block is the answer.

Example Walkthrough

Imagine the top row has 1, 2, 3, and an empty cell. The empty cell must be 4 (since each row needs all four numbers). Now check: does the column for that cell already have a 4? If not, place it. If yes, you've made an error earlier — recheck your work. This back-and-forth checking is the core of Sudoku logic.

Progressing to Bigger Grids

Once 4×4 puzzles feel easy, try 6×6 Sudoku with 2×3 blocks. The same rules apply, but there are more numbers to track. After mastering 6×6, the classic 9×9 Sudoku becomes approachable.
